Girl Scout Horsemanship Patch Program
We have developed a Girl Scout, Boy Scout, and Home School Horsemanship program based on the Girl Scout and Boy Scout outline in earning a horsemanship patch and badge. This is an introductory class to horses, horse care, and horsemanship.
We set up 4 stations and have an employee at each station lead the kids through the stations. There will be 30 minutes given for each station.
There will be 3-6 kids participating at each station, and up to 24 kids can participate in one event.
Each participant will get a name badge with their name, group number, and the order of stations they will be going to. The participants will also get a little handbook, it is simple and fun. The material reviews what the students learned on the ranch. The kids will have to name 5 safety precautions while near a horse, they will have to name a type of hay horses eat, and they will need to tell us 3 things horses need to be healthy. They will also have to be able to mount, ride, and dismount a horse to get a patch.
The stations include:
Station 1: Horse Husbandry:
All the kids will learn what it takes to care for a horse. Our staff leader will talk to them about the type of housing horses live in, the different types of food horses eat, and the importance of caring for the horse’s health.
Station 2: Horse Grooming and Saddling:
There will be 1 horse in which the students will be shown how to properly groom (brush) and saddle a horse. Every student will get the opportunity to groom a horse.
Station 3: Archery:
Students will learn to shoot an arrow safely in hay targets we have set up.
Station 4: Horseback Riding:
We will have each group, 3-6 kids, ride together in an enclosed arena for 30 minutes. Each rider will get a basic lesson on mounting, riding cues to communicate with the horse while riding, they will learn to walk and trot on the horse, and we will play some fun riding games.
Cost: For 8-12 participants: $60 per participant
For 13-24 participants: $50 per participant
